The Elephant Hotel still stands on Ridge Road in Elephant, Bedminster Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Joseph K. Nicholas, the original proprietor, obtained a two-year tavern license in 1845 to run a hotel at his residence. A lapse in licensing for the hotel for one year and its relicensing in 1848 possibly explains the date of 1848 found on the sign. In order to secure the original sign for the Mercer Museum, Henry Chapman Mercer agreed to have a copy of it painted. This copy of the sign still hangs in front of the tavern.
